Overview
A tummy tuck removes surplus skin and fat from the lower abdomen and stitches together the abdominal muscles that separate during pregnancy or weight change. It leaves a permanent scar running low across the abdomen, along the underwear line; accepting that scar is a condition of the operation. It is done under general anaesthetic and you stay two nights in hospital.

Examination and tests
Your surgeon measures the surplus skin and the muscle separation and marks the scar line with you. Blood tests and the anaesthetic assessment are completed before surgery.

The operation takes 3–4 hours under general anaesthetic and you stay two nights in hospital. Drains are usually placed to reduce fluid collection.

Checks and flight clearance
Drains come out, stitches are removed and you are shown how to use the compression garment. You fly home once your surgeon clears you; the programme runs 10–12 days.
Aftercare & long-term tips
Wear your compression garment for about 6 weeks, walk short distances from the first day and lift nothing heavy for 6 weeks. Once the wound has closed fully, continue scar care with silicone tape or gel for at least 6 months. Swelling and a tight feeling across the abdomen come and go for months, and the final result settles at around 9 months.

Stick to soft, lukewarm foods and drinks; avoid very hot or hard items while any numbness or sensitivity settles.

Risks and an honest expectation
A tummy tuck is one of the larger body contouring operations. Wound healing problems and tissue loss along the scar line are markedly more common in smokers and in poorly controlled diabetes, and seroma is frequent enough that it may need draining. Numbness above the scar lasts months and can be partly permanent. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are rare but serious, so early walking, compression stockings and, where indicated, blood-thinning medication are used, and you stay two nights in hospital under observation.
