Risks and an honest expectation
The procedure is carried out under sedation, which carries its own anaesthetic risk and requires a full medical history; swelling and bruising for several days are normal. If one implant fails the whole arch is at risk, and a new implant and often a new bridge are needed. Longer term the risks are peri-implantitis, screw loosening, fracture of the acrylic or zirconia bridge, and a change in speech during the first weeks; the angled back implants also sit near the nerve in the lower jaw and the sinus in the upper. Planning is CT-guided, sedation is given by an anaesthetist, and maintenance recall is part of the plan.
