Eligibility is assessed using body mass index and any accompanying conditions. The general threshold is a BMI of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35–40 together with a metabolic condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea. At a lower BMI, non-surgical options — gastric balloon, gastric Botox — are discussed instead. The final decision is made after pre-operative endoscopy, blood tests and, where necessary, cardiology and respiratory consultations.
No surgery without a full work-up
No surgery date is set until endoscopy, blood tests, any necessary consultations and an anaesthesia assessment are complete. This adds a day to the process and significantly reduces the risk.
Twelve months of dietitian follow-up
After discharge, you have weekly remote consultations through the liquid, purée and solid-food stages, followed by monthly check-ins. Your weight curve is monitored together with your dietitian.
A hospital with intensive care
Surgery is carried out by a team experienced in bariatric surgery, at a fully equipped hospital with intensive care facilities. A leak test is performed during the operation itself.

Arrival and tests

Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery, under general anaesthetic, takes 60–120 minutes. You're helped up and walking on the same day as the operation.

Monitoring in hospital
A gradual transition to fluids, pain relief and blood-thinning treatment, and a leak check if needed. Discharge usually takes place on day three.

Bariatric surgery carries risks of bleeding, leaks, blood clots, strictures, vitamin deficiency, and rarely, further surgery. It requires lifelong vitamin supplementation and regular blood tests afterwards; any pregnancy plans should be postponed for at least 12–18 months.
