Overview
Gum disease treatment (periodontal therapy) tackles the infection and inflammation that cause bleeding gums, bad breath and, untreated, tooth loss. Through deep cleaning below the gum line and tailored care, it restores healthy gums and protects the foundation of your teeth.
Benefits
- Stops bleeding, swollen gums
- Treats infection and bad breath
- Protects teeth from loosening and loss
- An essential base before cosmetic work
Who is this treatment for?
Usually suitable
- Bleeding gums, bad breath and tartar below the gum line with early to moderate pocketing
- Patients preparing for veneers, crowns or implants, where healthy gums are a precondition
- Smokers and diabetics who accept that maintenance every few months is part of the treatment
Needs assessment first
- Advanced bone loss with mobile teeth, where deep cleaning alone may not save every tooth and surgery or extraction may still be needed
- Smokers who will not stop, since gums respond noticeably worse and the disease returns faster
- Anyone who cannot come back for maintenance appointments, because uncontrolled recurrence undoes the result
Final suitability is decided by your consultant after examination and imaging in Istanbul.

Risks and an honest expectation
As the inflammation settles the gums shrink, so spaces open between the teeth, root surfaces are exposed and cold sensitivity follows; this is healing rather than damage, but it visibly changes the front teeth and you should know that before treatment rather than after. Teeth can feel looser for a few weeks as the swelling that was propping them up subsides. Where bone loss is already advanced, treatment stabilises the disease but does not grow the bone back, and some teeth may still be lost. Pockets are charted before and after, local anaesthetic is used for deep cleaning, and your maintenance interval is set individually rather than by a standard rule.
