Risks and an honest expectation
Root canal treatment does not always work: infection can persist or return, and retreatment, an apicoectomy or eventually extraction may be needed. An instrument can separate inside a canal, a canal wall can be perforated, and a canal that is missed keeps the infection alive. Tenderness for a few days afterwards is common, and the tooth becomes more brittle and will fracture if left without a crown. The tooth is isolated under rubber dam, X-rays are taken at each stage, and the crown is built into the plan rather than left to a later trip.
