Risks and an honest expectation
Dry socket is the commonest complication, usually around day three, and smoking, straws and rinsing too early make it far more likely. Bleeding, infection, swelling and bruising can follow, and a root fragment can break and need a small surgical retrieval. Upper back teeth sit under the sinus, where a communication can open, and lower back teeth sit near the nerve. Bone at the site always shrinks after an extraction, which is why the replacement is planned in advance.
