Risks and an honest expectation
Lower wisdom teeth lie close to the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves, so numbness or altered sensation of the lip, chin or tongue can follow; it is usually temporary but can occasionally be permanent. Dry socket, a sharp pain around day three when the clot is lost, is the commonest complication and is far more likely with smoking and straws. Infection, swelling, bruising and restricted mouth opening are expected to varying degrees, and an upper wisdom tooth can open a communication with the sinus. A CT scan is taken when the roots look close to the nerve, a medication plan and written aftercare are given, and you are reviewed before you fly.
