Overview
In smart lens treatment the eye's own natural lens is removed and a trifocal intraocular lens, designed to focus at distance, middle and near, is implanted in its place. Because the natural lens is gone, a cataract can no longer develop in later life. It is usually considered from around 45 onwards, in people who need correction for both distance and reading or who already show the beginnings of a cataract. It is done under anaesthetic drops, takes about 20 minutes per eye, and the two eyes are normally operated a few days apart rather than on the same day.

Full eye examination
Retina, eye pressure, cornea and pupil size are assessed and the lens power is calculated by biometry. Whether a trifocal lens suits you is decided here.

First eye
The natural lens is broken up with ultrasound and removed, and the folded trifocal lens is placed through a small incision. It takes around 20 minutes and you return to your hotel the same day.

Second eye and checks
Once the first eye is reviewed, the second is usually done a few days later. Both eyes are checked and your drop schedule confirmed before you fly.
Aftercare & long-term tips
Use your drops in the order and for the length of time you are given, avoid rubbing your eyes and skip heavy lifting for the first week. Stay out of pools, the sea and saunas for at least three to four weeks. Night haloes are at their strongest in the early weeks and ease with time; have your one-month and three-month checks at home and send us the results.

Stick to soft, lukewarm foods and drinks; avoid very hot or hard items while any numbness or sensitivity settles.

Ease back into normal eating as sensitivity fades — usually within a few days.

Risks and an honest expectation
This is intraocular surgery: infection, a rise in eye pressure, macular swelling and, rarely, retinal detachment can occur, and detachment risk is higher in strongly short-sighted eyes. Night haloes and reduced contrast are not complications but known adaptation effects of the lens, and in some patients they persist. If the result lands away from the target, glasses, a laser touch-up or, uncommonly, a lens exchange may be needed.
