Overview
Dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid gel injected under the skin to replace lost volume, soften folds and define the lips, chin or cheek line. It takes about 30 minutes under local anaesthetic cream. The effect is temporary and, because hyaluronic acid is used, it can be dissolved with an enzyme and reversed if necessary.

Aftercare & long-term tips
Do not rub the area for the first 24 hours, and avoid exercise, saunas and hot showers for the rest of the day. Swelling and bruising can last a few days and are slightly more noticeable in the lips. We review the result at 2–4 weeks, and a repeat is generally planned at 6–12 months as the effect fades.

Risks and an honest expectation
The expected side effects are swelling and bruising for a few days; lumps and asymmetry can occur and are usually correctable. The rare but serious risk is vascular occlusion, where filler enters a blood vessel, which can cause skin necrosis and, very rarely, loss of vision. For that reason treatment is carried out by a doctor, the dissolving enzyme is kept on site, and a review is scheduled within two weeks.
