Overview
Gynaecomastia surgery removes the enlarged glandular tissue in the male chest and thins the surrounding fat with liposuction. At Clinic Mery it takes about two hours under general anaesthetic and you are discharged the same day. The cause of the enlargement is reviewed beforehand: if there is a hormonal reason, a medication involved or a lump that needs investigating, that comes first.
Benefits
- Gland and fat are treated together, since liposuction alone does not remove firm glandular tissue
- The incision sits at the lower border of the areola and fades over time
- You are discharged the same day, with no overnight hospital stay
- Desk work is realistic at around seven days
- Compression vest, medication and follow-up checks are included in the programme
Who is this treatment for?
Usually suitable
- Men with glandular enlargement present for at least a year that has not resolved on its own
- Those at a stable weight who are medically fit for general anaesthetic
- People whose hormonal causes have been investigated and treated where necessary
Needs assessment first
- Anyone with a firm one-sided lump, nipple discharge or rapidly growing swelling, which must be investigated before surgery
- Men continuing anabolic steroids or a medication known to cause gynaecomastia, since the problem can recur
- Those carrying significant excess weight, where losing weight first improves both the result and safety
Final suitability is decided by your consultant after examination and imaging in Istanbul.
Your treatment, step by step
- 01
Free online consultation
Send front and side photographs of the chest along with a list of any medication you take; within 24 hours we prepare a free assessment and plan.
- 02
Examination and looking for a cause
Examination distinguishes glandular tissue from fat, and hormone tests or imaging are requested where needed. A firm one-sided lump or nipple discharge is investigated fully before any surgery.
- 03
Surgery: two hours under general anaesthetic
Fat is thinned with liposuction and the gland removed through the incision under the areola. A compression vest is fitted and you are discharged the same day.
- 04
Check-ups and flight clearance
Wounds and any fluid collection are reviewed at follow-up and the duration of vest use is explained. With your surgeon's approval you fly home on day 5–7.
Aftercare & long-term tips
Once home, wear the compression vest for the period advised and avoid chest and shoulder weight training for six weeks. Keep the wound dry, and send a photograph if you notice fluid building up or swelling increasing. If a medication or hormonal problem caused the gynaecomastia, following that up in your own country matters for keeping the result.
First 24 hours

First few days
Ease back into normal eating as sensitivity fades — usually within a few days.
Long term
Eat normally and protect your result with the simple habits below.
Do
- Brush twice a day and floss daily

Avoid
- Biting very hard objects — ice, pen lids, shells
- Opening bottle or soda caps with your teeth
- Too many hard nuts or sticky, chewy sweets
- Smoking and staining drinks in the first days

Risks and an honest expectation
Gynaecomastia surgery can be followed by blood collection, fluid accumulation, infection, temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation and asymmetry between the two sides. Removing too much tissue under the areola leaves a saucer-shaped depression, while removing too little leaves an incomplete correction; either may need revision. Patients with loose skin may face a second stage to excise the excess. Pre-operative tests, four smoke-free weeks and consistent use of the compression vest are required to reduce these risks.
